Credit: Illustration by Ville Sinkkonen Researchers have discovered fossilized seeds in the stomach of Longipteryx chaoyangensis, an ancient bird previously thought to feed on fish or insects. This finding reveals that this species actually consumed fruits, challenging previous hypotheses about its diet. The study also explores the implications of Longipteryx’s unusual dental and skeletal features, suggesting these may have been used for non-dietary functions, such as social or sexual selection. Discovering Diet: Unusual Fossil Find For paleontologists who study animals that lived long ago, fossilized remains tell only part of the story of an animal’s life. While a well-preserved skeleton can provide hints at what an ancient animal ate or how it moved, irrefutable proof of these behaviors is hard to come by. But sometimes, scientists luck out with extraordinary fossils that preserve something beyond the animal’s body. Case in point: in a new study published today (September 10) in the journal Current Biology, researchers found fossilized seeds in the stomachs of one of the earliest birds. This discovery shows that these birds were eating fruits, despite a long-standing hypothesis that this species of bird feasted on fish (and more recent hypotheses it ate insects) with its incredibly strong teeth. Skull of Longipteryx, showing its teeth. Credit: Xiaoli Wang Insights Into Longipteryx chaoyangensis Longipteryx chaoyangensis lived 120 million years ago in what’s now northeastern China. It’s among the earliest known birds, and one of the strangest. “Longipteryx is one of my favorite fossil birds, because it’s just so weird — it has this long skull, and teeth only at the tip of its beak,” says Jingmai O’Connor, associate curator of fossil reptiles in the Field Museum’s Neguanee Integrative Research Center and the study’s lead author. “Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the body, and Longipteryx’s tooth enamel is 50 microns thick. That’s the same thickness of the enamel on enormous predatory dinosaurs like Allosaurus that weighed 4,000 pounds, but Longipteryx is the size of a bluejay,” says Alex Clark, a PhD student at the Field Museum and the University of Chicago and a co-author of the paper. Credit: Xiaoli Wang Rethinking Prehistoric Bird Diets Longipteryx was discovered in 2000, and at the time, scientists suggested that its kingfisher-like elongated skull meant that it too hunted fish. However, this hypothesis has been challenged by a number of scientists, including O’Connor. “There are other fossil birds, like Yanornis, that ate fish, and we know because specimens have been found with preserved stomach contents, and fish tend to preserve well. Plus, these fish-eating birds had lots of teeth, all the way along their beaks, unlike how Longipteryx only has teeth at the very tip of its beak,” says O’Connor. “It just didn’t add up.” However, no specimens of Longipteryx had been found with fossilized food still in their stomachs for scientists to confirm what it ate — until now. O’Connor visited the Shandong Tianyu Museum of Nature in China, where she noticed two Longipteryx specimens that appeared to have something in their stomachs. She consulted with her colleague, paleobotanist and Field Museum associate curator of fossil plants Fabiany Herrera, who was able to determine that the tiny, round structures in the birds’ stomachs were seeds from the fruits of an ancient tree. (Or technically, flesh-covered seeds — “true fruits” are only found in flowering plants, which were just starting to flourish 120 million years ago when Longipteryx lived. The trees that Longipteryx was feeding from were gymnosperms, relatives of today’s conifers and gingkos.) Credit: Kate Golembiewski Dietary Habits and Evolutionary Adaptations Since Longipteryx lived in a temperate climate, it probably wasn’t eating fruits year-round; O’Connor and her colleagues suspect that it had a mixed diet which included things like insects when fruits weren’t available. Longipteryx is part of a larger group of prehistoric birds called the enantiornithines, and this discovery marks the first time that scientists have found any stomach contents from an enantiornithine in China’s Jehol Biota despite thousands of uncovered fossils. “It’s always been weird that we didn’t know what they were eating, but this study also hints at a bigger picture problem in paleontology, that physical characteristics of a fossil don’t always tell the whole story about what animal ate or how it lived,” says O’Connor. Since Longipteryx apparently wasn’t hunting for fish, that leaves a question: what was it using its long, pointy beak and crazy-strong teeth for? “The thick enamel is overpowered, it seems to be weaponized,” says Clark, who looked to modern birds to try to understand what Longipteryx was doing with its beak. “One of the most common parts of the skeleton that birds use for aggressive displays is the rostrum, the beak. Having a weaponized beak makes sense, because it moves the weapon further away from the rest of the body, to prevent injury.” “There are no modern birds with teeth, but there are these really cool little hummingbirds that have keratinous projections near the tip of the rostrum that resemble what you see in Longipteryx, and they use them as weapons to fight each other,” says O’Connor. Weaponized beaks in hummingbirds have evolved at least seven times, allowing them to compete for limited resources. Clark suggested the hypothesis that perhaps Longipteryx’s teeth and beak also served as a weapon, perhaps evolving under social or sexual selection The researchers say that beyond figuring out more about the life of one weird prehistoric bird, they hope their research helps illuminate broader questions in paleontology about how much scientists can (or can’t) trust skeletal traits to tell the story of animal behavior. “We’re trying to open up a new area of research for these early birds and get paleontologists to look at these structures, like the beak, and think about the complexity of the behaviors that these animals might have engaged in beyond just what they were eating,” says O’Connor. “There are many factors that could be shaping the structures that we see.” Reference: “Direct evidence of frugivory in the Mesozoic bird Longipteryx contradicts morphological proxies for diet” by Jingmai O’Connor, Alexander Clark, Fabiany Herrera, Xin Yang, Xiaoli Wang, Xiaoting Zheng, Han Hu and Zhonghe Zhou, 10 September 2024, Current Biology. Study in mice finds high-fat, high-sugar diet has long-lasting effects on the microbiome. Credit: UCR Effects of Unhealthy Food Followed Young Mice Into Adulthood Eating too much fat and sugar as a child can alter your microbiome for life, even if you later learn to eat healthier, a new study in mice suggests. The study by UC Riverside researchers is one of the first to show a significant decrease in the total number and diversity of gut bacteria in mature mice fed an unhealthy diet as juveniles. “We studied mice, but the effect we observed is equivalent to kids having a Western diet, high in fat and sugar and their gut microbiome still being affected up to six years after puberty,” explained UCR evolutionary physiologist Theodore Garland. A paper describing the study has recently been published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. The microbiome refers to all the bacteria as well as fungi, parasites, and viruses that live on and inside a human or animal. Most of these microorganisms are found in the intestines, and most of them are helpful, stimulating the immune system, breaking down food and helping synthesize key vitamins. In a healthy body, there is a balance of pathogenic and beneficial organisms. However, if the balance is disturbed, either through the use of antibiotics, illness, or unhealthy diet, the body could become susceptible to disease. In this study, Garland’s team looked for impacts on the microbiome after dividing their mice into four groups: half fed the standard, ‘healthy’ diet, half fed the less healthy ‘Western’ diet, half with access to a running wheel for exercise, and half without. After three weeks spent on these diets, all mice were returned to a standard diet and no exercise, which is normally how mice are kept in a laboratory. At the 14-week mark, the team examined the diversity and abundance of bacteria in the animals. Key Bacteria Reduced by Unhealthy Diet They found that the quantity of bacteria such as Muribaculum intestinale was significantly reduced in the Western diet group. This type of bacteria is involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Analysis also showed that the gut bacteria are sensitive to the amount of exercise the mice got. Muribaculum bacteria increased in mice fed a standard diet who had access to a running wheel and decreased in mice on a high-fat diet whether they had exercise or not. Researchers believe this species of bacteria, and the family of bacteria that it belongs to, might influence the amount of energy available to its host. Research continues into other functions that this type of bacteria may have. One other effect of note was the increase in a highly similar bacteria species that were enriched after five weeks of treadmill training in a study by other researchers, suggesting that exercise alone may increase its presence. Lasting Impact of Early Diet vs. Exercise Overall, the UCR researchers found that early-life Western diet had more long-lasting effects on the microbiome than did early-life exercise. Garland’s team would like to repeat this experiment and take samples at additional points in time, to better understand when the changes in mouse microbiomes first appear, and whether they extend into even later phases of life. Regardless of when the effects first appear, however, the researchers say it’s significant that they were observed so long after changing the diet, and then changing it back. Credit: Parks Australia Bacterium Responsible for Deaths of Critically Endangered Species With wild populations decimated, Lister’s gecko and the blue-tailed skink only exist in captivity. University of Sydney researchers have discovered a bacterium, which could cause their potential extinction. Native reptile populations on Christmas Island have been in severe decline with two species, Lister’s gecko and the blue-tailed skink, entirely disappearing from the wild. While previously the main driver for this decline is likely predation by invasive species and habitat destruction, a silent killer is now threatening to wipe the species out entirely. Those bred in captivity on the Australian Territory in the Indian Ocean have also been mysteriously dying, leaving the two species – which number only around 1000 each – in danger of extinction. Veterinary scientists from the University of Sydney, the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health and the Taronga Conservation Society Australia have now discovered the cause of these deaths: a bacterium, Enterococcus lacertideformus (E. lacertideformus). Credit: Jessica Agius The bacterium was discovered in 2014 after captive reptiles presented with facial deformities and lethargy, and some even died. Samples were collected and analyzed using microscopy and genetic testing. The researchers’ findings, published in Frontiers in Microbiology, will inform antibiotic trials on the reptiles to see if the infection can be treated. How the Infection Spreads Among Reptiles The bacterium grows in the animal’s head, then in its internal organs, before eventually causing death. It can be spread by direct contact – including through reptiles’ mouths, or via reptiles biting one another – often during breeding season fights. “This means that healthy captive animals need to be kept apart from infected ones and should also be kept away from areas where infected animals have been,” said Jessica Agius, co-lead researcher and PhD candidate in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science. Credit: Jessica Agius Ms. Agius and the research team not only identified the bacterium, they decoded its genetic structure using whole genome sequencing. Specific genes were identified that are likely to be associated with the bacterium’s ability to infect its host, invade its tissues, and avoid the immune system. Biofilm Formation Adds to the Threat “We also found that the bacterium can surround itself with a biofilm – a ‘community of bacteria’ that can help it survive,” Ms. Agius said. “Understanding how E. lacertideformus produces and maintains the biofilm may provide insights on how to treat other species of biofilm-forming bacteria.” The search of the genetic code suggested that the killer bacterium was susceptible to most antibiotics. Professor David Phalen, research co-lead and Ms. Agius’ PhD supervisor, said: “This suggests that infected animals might be successfully treated. That’s what we need to determine now.” In another effort to protect the endangered reptiles on Christmas Island, a population of blue-tailed skinks has been established on the Cocos Islands. Ms. Agius played a critical role in the translocation, testing reptiles on the Cocos Islands to make sure that they were free of E. lacertideformus. “It’s critical we act now to ensure these native reptiles survive,” Ms. Agius said.
