Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by lifes worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.
Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you."
And I have also said, I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you. "
31:24 - 28"If I have put my trust in gold or said to pure gold, You are my security, if I have rejoiced over my great wealth, the fortune my hands had gained, if I have regarded the sun in its radiance or the moon moving in splendor, so that my heart was secretly enticed and my hand offered them a kiss of homage, then these also would be sins to be judged, for I would have been unfaithful to God on high.
Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips.
Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.
All who worship images are put to shame, those who boast in idols- worship him, all you gods!
They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.
Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it.
10:2Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death.
Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil.
The greedy bring ruin to their households, but the one who hates bribes will live.
Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.
Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare.
21:17Whoever loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich.
23:4 - 5Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. Saying 9
Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. Saying 17
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mind will imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. "They hit me," you will say, "but Im not hurt! They beat me, but I dont feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?"
It is not good to eat too much honey, nor is it honorable to search out matters that are too deep.
25:28Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.
Death and Destruction are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes.
Whoever increases wealth by taking interest or profit from the poor amasses it for another, who will be kind to the poor.
28:20A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
The stingy are eager to get rich and are unaware that poverty awaits them.
The greedy stir up conflict, but those who trust in the Lord will prosper.
Those who flatter their neighbors are spreading nets for their feet.
Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them? The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep.
I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners, or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when they have children there is nothing left for them to inherit.
Everyones toil is for their mouth, yet their appetite is never satisfied.
Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine. They have harps and lyres at their banquets, pipes and timbrels and wine, but they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord, no respect for the work of his hands.
28:22Now stop your mocking, or your chains will become heavier; the Lord, the Lord Almighty, has told me of the destruction decreed against the whole land.
"Woe to the obstinate children," declares the Lord, "to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin; who go down to Egypt without consulting me; who look for help to Pharaohs protection, to Egypts shade for refuge. But Pharaohs protection will be to your shame, Egypts shade will bring you disgrace.
You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill; there you went up to offer your sacrifices. Behind your doors and your doorposts you have put your pagan symbols. Forsaking me, you uncovered your bed, you climbed into it and opened it wide; you made a pact with those whose beds you love, and you looked with lust on their naked bodies. You went to Molek with olive oil and increased your perfumes. You sent your ambassadors far away; you descended to the very realm of the dead! You wearied yourself by such going about, but you would not say, It is hopeless. You found renewal of your strength, and so you did not faint.
I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you. When you cry out for help, let your collection of idols save you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow them away. But whoever takes refuge in me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain."
Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols.
Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay are those who gain riches by unjust means. When their lives are half gone, their riches will desert them, and in the end they will prove to be fools.
" They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the Lords wrath. It will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, for it has caused them to stumble into sin.
My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain.
to prostitution; old wine and new wine take away their understanding.
"You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?" declares the Lord Almighty. "Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house.
Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
6:19 - 21"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.
The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
4:8 - 9Jesus answered, "It is written: Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. " The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here.
