The Threepenny Opera Original German poster from Berlin, 1928. Music Kurt Weill Lyrics Bertolt Brecht Book Bertolt Brecht Basis John Gay's The Beggar's Opera Productions Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, Berlin, 31 August 1928 The Threepenny Opera (German: Die Dreigroschenoper) is a musical by German dramatist Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, in collaboration with translator Elisabeth Hauptmann and set designer Caspar Neher.[1] It was adapted from an 18th-century English ballad opera, John Gay's The Beggar's Opera, and offers a Marxist critique of the capitalist world. It opened on 31 August 1928 at Berlin's Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. By 1933, when Brecht and Weill were forced to leave Germany by the rise of Hitler, the play had been translated into 18 languages and performed more than 10,000 times on European stages. The Threepenny Opera is a work of "epic theatre". It challenges conventional notions of property as well as those of theatre. It dramatises the question: "Who is the greater criminal: he who robs a bank or he who founds one?" The Threepenny Opera is also an early example of the "modern musical comedy" genre. Its score is deeply influenced by jazz. The orchestration involves a small ensemble with a good deal of doubling-up on instruments (in the original performances, for example, some 7 players covered a total of 23 instrumental parts, though modern performances typically use a few more players). 參見: http://blog.xuite.net/richardwagner/library/21248192 ******************* Louis Armstrong - Mack The Knife - 1959 Oh the shark babe has such teeth, dear And he shows them pearly white Just a jack knife has ol’ MacHeath, babe And he keeps it out of sight You know when that shark bites with his teeth, dear Scarlet billows start to spread Fancy gloves though wears ol’ MacHeath, babe So there's never, never a trace of red On the sidewalk, Oh Sunday morning don’t you know Lies a body just oozing life And Someone's sneaking around the corner Could that be our boy Mack the knife? This album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, which is a special Grammy award established in 1973 to honor recordings that are at least twenty-five years old, and that have "qualitative or historical significance." One of Fitzgerald's most acclaimed live performances, at this concert in Berlin, Fitzgerald successfully improvised the lyrics for the song, "Mack the Knife" after forgetting them. In recognition for this, she received the Best Female Vocal Performance (Single) and the Best Vocal Performance, Female (Album) at the 3rd Grammy Awards. During her Scat solo on "How High the Moon", Fitzgerald quotes the Charlie Parker composition "Ornithology", which is in fact based on the chord changes for "How High the Moon", as a springboard for her own scat improvisation. This recording of "How High the Moon" is considered one of Fitzgerald's best scat solos, if not one of the best in jazz, along with Betty Carter's "Sounds (Movin' On).
