並為他拿到葛萊美年度專輯的提名

同名首支主打〔Sign “O” the Times〕登上美國流行榜＃３ , 英國＃１０ , 為其代表作之一。

１９８７年５月２日, 王子發行第二單曲［If I Was Your Girlfriend／假如我是你的女友］

此曲原本是１９８６年王子打算偽裝成女性自我發行同名大碟［Camille］中的歌曲,

後來大碟沒發行, 數首作品轉而收在〔Sign “O” the Times〕。

［If I Was Your Girlfriend］以一個男性對女性的看法,假使他是愛人的柏拉圖女友, 兩人關係會更加親近。

謠傳這是王子嫉妒當時女友Susannah Melvoin與雙胞胎姐美的親密連結。

王子將此曲製作一首Funk／R&B, 在中等速度間, 王子以假音戲劇化的演繹, 頗獲好評, 被認為是大碟中的佳作之一。

［If I Was Your Girlfriend］打入Billboard單曲榜＃６７, 副榜－黑人榜＃１２
