１９５３年１１月　美國黑人歌手亞歷山大歐尼爾（Alexander O’Neal）出生於密西西比州

２０歲定居在明尼亞波利斯　擔任許多樂團歌手

１９７０年代末加入Funk／R&B團體 Flyte Tyme—－成員包括Monte Moir, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis等

１９８１年　Flyte Tyme被王子簽下　進入華納唱片體系 改名The Time

由於跟王子意見不合　歐尼爾選擇離團　先成立樂團Alexander發展

１９８４年與Tabu唱片簽約

１９８５年３月推出首張同名大碟［Alexander O’Neal］　邀來舊同事Jimmy Jam ＆ Terry Lewis擔任製作人　另一位‘The Time’成員Jelly Bean Johnson也貢獻鼓, 打擊樂器, 吉他演奏

是張受The Time影響極深的專輯, 出版後獲得高度評價

首支單曲為［Innocent／純真］

原版是專輯中一首長達１０分半鐘的混合曲［Innocent"/"Alex 9000"/"Innocent II］, 將其剪輯成單曲版

此曲由Jimmy Jam ＆ Terry Lewis創作／製作, 是首融合電子放克, 靈魂, R&B的流行歌曲

歌手夏瑞爾（Cherelle）也擔任合音

［Innocent］並沒擠入Billboard單曲榜

但拿到Billboard副榜──黑人榜＃１１　讓他在R&B界受到矚目

這也是歐尼爾少數沒打入英國榜的單曲

接下數首主打表現不錯, 加上客串夏瑞爾專輯的單曲［Saturday Love］拿到Billboard黑人榜亞軍, 單曲榜＃２６　英國榜＃６

讓亞歷山大在美國黑人音樂界與英國成為著名歌手, 歌唱事業有好的開始
